In these days of watching dollars here's a good cheap dog biscuit recipe - it makes lots and they love them. I have made it substituting whatever I didn't have, like old oats (been in the cupboard a couple of years!) instead of cracked wheat last time.
Ingreds:
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (or whatever you have)
2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 cup rye flour
1 cup cornmeal
2 cups cracked wheat
1/2 cup non-fat milk powder
4 teas salt
2 cups chicken stock
1/4 ounce dry yeast (1 packet)
1 egg
1 tablspn milk
Procedure:
1. Preheat oven to 300F . Combine in a big bowl, the flours, cornmeal, milk powder and salt
2. In a separate bowl dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup lukewarm water. Let sit a few mins.
3. Add the chicken stock to the yeast mixture. Mix well.
4. Add the liquid to the dry incredients. Knead about 3 mins. Dough should be stiff.
5. Flour a surface with cornmeal and roll out the dough to a thickness of 1/4 inch. Cut out biscuits with knife or cookie cutters in appropriate shapes, and place on ungreased baking pans. 6. Mix the egg and milk and spread with brush generously over top of shapes.
7. Bake the biscuits for 45 mins.
8. Turn off the heat and leave biscuits in the oven overnite. This will make them bone-hard.
note: Though these are intended for dogs, they can be eaten by people. Haven't tried them myself yet!
