Ingredients
For 4-6 servings:
600-800g Fresh BBQ Steak
2 Tbsp soy sauce
2 Tbsp sweet chilli sauce
2 Tbsp lemon juice
1-2 Tbsp vegetable oil
2 medium onions sliced
1 loaf thickly sliced bread
Mayonnaise
About 8 lettuce leaves
3-4 tomatoes, sliced
4-6 slices Alpine Cheese, Mild, Colby or Edam
Method
Place the steak in a sturdy plastic bag with the soy sauce, sweet chilli and sauce and lemon juice. Squeeze as much air as you can from the bag and massage so the steak is covered with the marinade, then set aside to stand for 5-10 minutes.
While the steak marinates, heat the oil in a heavy pan or on a barbecue hot plate and cook the onion, stirring occasionally, until soft and turning brown, then transfer to a small bowl.
Place the steaks in the heated pan (or on the hot barbecue) and cook for three minutes per side (cook a little longer if you like them well done). Transfer the steak t a board and leave to stand for a few minutes, before slicing thinly with a knife held at 45 degrees to the chopping board.
Spread 4-6 slices of bread with mayonnaise. Cover each with a lettuce leaf or two, then some sliced tomato. Divide the sliced steak between the bread slices and top with a slice of cheese and some of the cooked onion. Season to taste with salt and pepper, then finally place the remaining slices of bread on the sandwiches and serve.
