Quick Cottage Pie

Easy, quick, economical and delicious cottage pie.

Ingredients

  • 700g lean minced beef
  • 2.5kg potatoes
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 teaspoon mixed spice
  • 1 teaspoon tomato puree
  • instant gravy powder
  • butter/oilve oil for potaoes
  • lots of black pepper

Method

  1. First peel and chop potatoes into small chunks and boil gently / steam until soft.When soft chop with a sharp knife , then start to mash, after a minute or so add butter or olive oil and continue to mash, occasionally using the masher as a whisk making sure nothing sticks to the bottom or corners of pan and set aside.
  2. Chop onion and garlic and fry for 5 minutes in olive oil until soft then add minced beef and brown. Make gravy about 1 pint following instructions on pack, add to mince and stir in rest of ingredients and cook for 15 minutes. Pour into ovenproof dish and allow to cool.
  3. When mince is cool top with potatoes gently spreading out with spatula or back of large spoon, make any pattern you like.
  4. Cook in pre-heated oven 190c, gas mark 5 or 375f for about 45 mins until golden brown and bubbling. Reduce cooking time by about 10mins if using fan assisted oven. Serve with fresh greens.
