Nannie's Butter Cream Icing

Recipe for butter cream icing, circa 1910.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. Powdered sugar (maybe a little more)
  • 42 oz. Shortening (Crisco is best)
  • 24 oz. Milk
  • Pinch of salt
  • Vanilla to taste

Method:

  1. Put shortening in bowl, then sugar, salt and milk.
  2. Mix a little, then add vanilla.
  3. For a creamier icing add 2 tsp.
  4. Cornstarch, which will help hold its consistency.
