Helen's Pound Cake

Funny things happen when Granny bakes a special cake.

It is very important that you follow directions explicitly because it is truly a one of a kind, special recipe.

My friend's grandmother Helen (74) made this cake for my daughter Sandra's birthday, and it was my good fortune to be witness there on that day.

First you must thoroughly sweep the kitchen floor. Second you mop it, and sterilize everything in the kitchen. Third you gather all the following ingredients very carefully.

Ingredients

  • 2 sticks of margarine
  • ½ cup Crisco
  • 3 c. sugar,
  • ½ t baking powder
  • 3 cups plain flour
  • If using walnuts use 2 1/4 t. vanilla, if no walnuts use 2 t. vanilla
  • 6 eggs, no shells
  • 1 cup milk

Directions

  1. Ceam margarine, Crisco, and sugar together.
  2. Then mix all the ingredients in with a mixer till batter is smooth.
  3. Then add as many walnuts as you can stand!
  4. Prepare your bunt pan and pour mixture into your pan. Bake at 325˚ for 1 hour and 20 minutes, unless you have an oven like granny's that burns everything. In that case you move the rack up a notch or two and check cake before you smell it burning, every 10-15 minutes. Be careful not to bump it as it will fall.
  5. When you see smoke it is done. Take it out of oven and put it on a cooling rack.
  6. Check it, the top must be cool but inside should still be warm for best effect.
  7. Drop it on the floor, but not too hard.
  8. Pick up and put crumb cake on a large plate.

No frosting is necessary.
