If you've read any of my other recipes you've noticed a theme here; easy to make, and I try to be healthy. My grilled cheese sandwich isn't as healthy as most of the recipes, but it is cheap and easy. Sometimes you just have to eat something cheap and easy and it doesn't have to be healthy, just taste good. This is without a doubt, the best grilled cheese sandwich you will ever eat!
Ingredients
- 2 Slices of cheese (mozzarella or cheddar)
- 2 Pieces of bread (I like grain breads)
- Smart Balance
- Parmesan Cheese
- Oregano
Simple enough list right? I prefer Smart Balance to butter. It's much healthier and provides a helpful kickback of vitamins and good cholesterol. Let the butter sit out for a few minutes to soften up, it's easier to spread and most importantly you can get away with using less of it.
- Butter is spread on the outsides of both pieces sparingly.
- Sprinkle parmesan cheese on the smart balance, make sure you spread it around.
- A light sprinkle of oregano on top the parmesan cheese and you're ready to go. I like mozzarella more than cheddar, but if you want to stick with the classics that works too.
- Heat the pan up on medium to medium-high heat.
- Fry one side of the bread so that the parmesan has browned and the butter melted then flip.
- After each flip place a lid over the pan to insulate the heat, this will help to melt the cheese and not burn the bread.
- Brown the other side the same as the first.
- Flip back to the first side and fry till the whole piece of bread is golden brown. The parmesan will be a little burnt which is what you want.
- Finish the other side, let cool and serve.
Parmesan is one of those funny foods that tastes completely different when you cook it, especially if you fry it. Trust me, once you try the parmesan you become addicted!
